What to Expect From the 2018 Yankees
In the offseason the Yankees acquired Giancarlos Stanton from the Miami Marlins. The Yankees already had the AL homerun leader in Aaron Judge, and then added the NL leader in Stanton. They also improved their infield by acquiring Brandon Drury. Even with those acquisitions they’re not a perfect team. Many people have picked them to win the AL East because of how explosive their offense is expected to be. The Yankees do have the talent to make a run, as last year they came within one game of the World Series. It will not be an easy road and they will face competition from the Red Sox, who won the division last year and added a big bat in J.D. Martinez.
The Yankees are expected to lead the majors in most offensive categories. Last year without Stanton they hit two hundred and forty one homeruns, the most in the majors. Adding Stanton will only make the number grow. Stanton will not hit a high average, but he will be a run producer. They have other young players such as Didi Gregarious and Gary Sanchez, who lasted year showed they’re rising stars. The Yankees have one of the deepest farm systems in the majors. At some point this year their top prospect Glebyer Torres, who is the fifth best prospect in baseball, is expected to make his debut. He could provide the Yankees with a boost both offensively and defensively. The Yankees have a deep lineup, but their starting rotation has some question marks.
The only question for the Yankees entering 2018 will be, how good will their pitching be? Last year Luis Severino had a breakout season and became the ace of the staff. In 2016, Severino struggled mightily and had an ERA of almost 6.00. Severino repeating his success from last year will be key for this team. They will also be relying on C.C. Sabathia, who last year appeared to have found the fountain of youth. Last year was the first time since 2013 that the former Cy Young award winner did not have a losing record. The Yankees also have Masahiro Tanaka, Jordan Montgomery, and Sonny Gray to round out the rest of the rotation. If this group can pitch like they did last year then they will be a very hard team to beat.
They also have a formidable bullpen led by Aroldis Chapman and Dellin Betances. Chapman is one of the fastest throws in the league and Betances would be the closer on any other team. They have another elite arm in David Robertson, who had an ERA of 1.84 last year.
The Yankees are a team that will be very good offensively. They have the potential to have a very formidable rotation. Other than Stanton and Drury, this is mostly the same team that was a game away from the World Series. That motivation will push them all year. The Yankees have the chance to be a very special team in 2018, but their pitching must repeat last years performance.
