Cleveland Has Nothing to Lose by Signing Dez Bryant
By Joel Deering
Dez Bryant will visit with the Cleveland Browns tomorrow. Cleveland has been interested in signing the former Dallas Cowboys receiver for quite some time, but nothing has surfaced until recently. The fact that Bryant is actually meeting with a team means there’s a good chance he’ll end up signing there. Prior to this meeting with the Browns, Dez Bryant hasn’t had much in terms of job offers, but it seems like the Browns are willing to give him one.
Since reports of the Browns being interested in Dez have come out, I’ve seen several articles saying how he’s not a good fit for this team. I both agree and disagree with that. I agree that Dez Bryant isn’t the best fit for the Browns as far as his personality goes. The Browns, or any team for that matter, don’t need a drama queen player like Bryant on their team. They don’t need players who are going to cause more problems for them. As far as who Dez Bryant is as a person, he’s not a good fit.
Now here’s where I disagree with Dez not being a good fit for the Browns. This team went 0-16 last year. They didn’t win a single game. Not one. Because they didn’t win a single game, this team needs to acquire as much talent as possible. So far they’ve done a really good job of acquiring talented players this offseason. They got Tyrod Taylor, Baker Mayfield, Jarvis Landry, Denzel Ward, Damarious Randall and several other players who can help this team get better.
Through free-agency, the draft, and trades, the Browns have made their team better this offseason. Although they’ve acquired a lot of talent and have gotten better, they’re still not going to be a team contending for a Super Bowl. In order to do that, they need to continue acquiring as much talent as they possibly can.
This is where Dez Bryant comes in. Dez Bryant was released by the Dallas Cowboys because he wasn’t living up to expectations, but that doesn’t mean he’s not talented. He may not be a number one guy anymore, but I’d still take Dez over a lot of other receivers in the NFL from a talent standpoint. With the talent Bryant still has, he can make the Cleveland Browns a better football team.
Can you imagine having Jarvis Landry, Josh Gordon, and Dez Bryant on the field at the same time? How do you cover all three guys? It’d be very tough to stop them. This is why I believe the Browns have nothing to lose by signing Dez Bryant. From a talent standpoint, he makes the team better. He does come with all the drama, but it’s not like the Browns don’t have their own drama to deal with already. The drama of being an 0-16 team is what they’re dealing with right now, which in my opinion is worse than dealing with Dez Bryant. If Dez can help the Browns even get one win, it’s got to be worth it for this team. It’s not like signing Dez can make them any worse.
I’m interested to see how the Browns are going to be this season. I don’t think they’ll be a great team, but I also don’t think they’re going 0-16 again. I feel like this team can compete to actually win games. They seem to be on the right track to being winners again after getting some talented players. If they keep adding talent the way they have been, we might actually see the Browns in the playoffs a few years down the road.
