What You May Have Missed This Weekend in Sports
It was another great weekend in sports! Don’t worry if you missed it, we’ve got you covered on what you may have missed. Let’s find out what happened this past weekend!
Mitch Trubisky’s Big Day
In what was an absolute crushing of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mitch Trubisky had a career day for the Chicago Bears. Trubisky threw 6 TD passes, with five of them coming in the first half. Trubisky became the second-youngest player to throw 6 TD passes in a game. This was the breakout moment we’ve been waiting for from Trubisky. Now can he keep it up?
Jameis Winston Returns….. And Throws an INT
To stick with the Bears vs Buccaneers game, now we’ll get to the bad part of it. After not getting the offense going, Ryan Fitzpatrick was replaced by Jameis Winston. On Winston’s first possession, he threw an INT. Winston also threw another INT in this game. What was once a magical fantasy at QB has now become an unsure situation for the Buccaneers.
Cowboys’ Last Second Win
One of the worst offense’s in the league through the first three weeks of the season came from the Dallas Cowboys. They needed that to change in this game, and it did. Their performance wasn’t perfect, but it was just good enough to get a win. Ezekiel Elliott was used a lot more, especially in the passing game. They finally got their best player involved the way they needed to and it paid off. Dallas was down 24-23 nearing the end of the game, but Dak Prescott led his offense into field goal range. He threw a clutch pass to Elliott to put them in range, and then K Brett Maher put a kick through the uprights to give the Cowboys a 26-24 victory over the Lions.
Dalton to Green Game Winner
The Bengals were in a shoot out against the Atlanta Falcons yesterday. They came close to losing, but Andy Dalton found A.J. Green for a TD with 7 seconds left in the game. Who else was he going to find? That TD gave the Bengals a 37-36 win over the Falcons, getting them to 3-1 on the season.
Titans Upset Eagles in OT
This may have been the shock of the day. The Tennessee Titans went into OT with the reigning Super Bowl champs and came out victorious! Marcus Mariota found WR Corey Davis for a 10-yard TD to give the Titans an upset win over the Eagles. Corey Davis had himself a career day, grabbing 9 receptions for 161 yards and a TD.
Colts’ Big Mistake
The Colts were tied with the Texans 34-34 in OT. They faced fourth down, but decided to go for it. The pass was incomplete, which then gave the Texans great field position. Houston went on to win 37-34 with a game winning field goal. That mistake on fourth down ruined a great day by Andrew Luck, who threw for 464 yards and 4 TDs with no INTs. Head Coach Frank Reich defended the fourth down call by saying they’re not playing to tie. You could agree with that, but is losing better than a tie? No.
Earl Thomas Breaks His Leg
Seattle’s much talked about safety, Earl Thomas, broke his leg against the Cardinals yesterday. That’s a sucky situation for Thomas, who was trying to get traded and receive an extension. It doesn’t look like Thomas will be traded this year. He’ll likely still get a good deal from someone after the season, but this injury could impact that.
Clemson Escapes Syracuse
If you didn’t watch this game, you missed out on a great one. Syracuse was up 16-3 at one point in the game after Clemson lost starting QB Trevor Lawrence to an injury. Backup QB Chase Brice stepped in for the Tigers and led them to victory when they needed him most. Brice led a huge TD drive at the end of the game to give the Tigers the lead. He completed a pass on fourth down to keep the drive alive and ran for 17 yards to get the Tigers inside the 20. The redshirt freshman with eight career passes stepped up big time in a crucial moment to ruin Syracuse’s upset hopes.
Kyler Murray Ties Baker Mayfield’s Oklahoma Record
Kyler Murray was on fire against Baylor! Murray completed 17-of-21 passes (81%) for 432 yards. He also threw 6 TD passes! Murray also had a rushing TD, giving him 7 total on the day. Murray’s 7 TDs tied Baker Mayfield’s record for most in Oklahoma history. Murray continues to make himself a Heisman favorite. Oh yeah, he didn’t even start this game. He only sat out one series, but still, he didn’t start and put up those numbers!
OSU vs PSU
Do you remember playing those NCAA Football games? Remember how after you played a close game you’d get an instant classic rating? This was one of those games. Ohio State was down in the fourth quarter, but came back to take the lead in the final two minutes of the game with a TD. The game went back and fourth. PSU was up 13-0, then OSU was up 14-13, PSU went back up 20-14, and they extended their lead to 26-14. OSU was down by 12 points and came back to win by 1. Instant classic!
Top 25 Upsets
More top 25 teams continued to be upset by unranked opponents. This week it was Florida beating No. 23 Mississippi State and Virginia Tech beating No. 22 Duke. These weren’t the biggest upsets, considering both teams were toward the bottom of the top 25, but they were still great victories for unranked teams.
Competition between United States and Eurpron played every two years in various locations. This year the venue was Le Golf National in Guyancourt, France. U.S. won back in 2016 and looked to win it again this year. After getting off to a slow start Friday, U.S. couldn’t come back. Europe went on to a 17.5-10.5 victory after entering the final day up 10-6. Europe kept the U.S. from winning on European soil for the first time since 1993.
Nascar Cup Series: Bank of America Roval 400 took place Sunday afternoon, but you probably missed it watching all that NFL. It had some of the biggest names like Jimmie Johnson (four time winner). Other names like Kevin Harvick, Chase Elliot, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, and Martin Truex Jr. (2017 winner). After 109 laps, the other 39 drivers in Charlotte watched Ryan Blaney take his victory laps into the winner circle!
