After missing last week, Fourth Quarter Sports brings you another edition of “What You May Have Missed.” It was another action packed weekend in the sports world. In the unfortunate case you didn’t get to watch, let’s get you all caught up.
Patriots vs Bears Goes Down to the Wire
This was a great game to watch. If you get a chance to watch replay, go watch it! The most exciting part of the game came right at the very end. Chicago was down 31-38, but on the final play of the game, QB Mitch Trubisky threw a 54-yard bomb in hopes they’d be able to score a TD and tie the game. Bears WR Kevin White caught the ball and was stopped at the 1-yard line, sealing the win for the Patriots.
The Saints vs Ravens game ended in a shocker. Down 17-24 at the end of the game, the Ravens scored a late TD to put them down 23-24. All they needed to tie the game was the extra point. Ravens K Justin Tucker lined up for the kick, but he missed…. This is significant because it was the first extra point Justin Tucker had missed in his entire NFL career! Before missing that extra point, Tucker was 222 for 222 on extra points. Talk about bad timing for his first miss.
Drew Brees Throws TD Number 500
Drew Brees and the Saints didn’t mind Justin Tucker missing that extra point. It secured what was another historic day for QB Drew Brees. In this game against the Ravens, Brees became the fourth QB ever to throw 500 TD passes. He joined Peyton Manning, Brett Favre and Tom Brady as the only QBs to do it. Congrats to Drew Brees.
Ohio State Falls to Purdue
The Ohio State Buckeyes have lost their first game of the season. Was it a loss to a ranked team? Nope. Was it a close loss? Nope. Not only did Ohio State lose to unranked opponent, but they got blown out 49-20. What a win for the Purdue Boilermakers! Will that keep Ohio State out of the College Football Playoff? We’ll have to wait and see, but it could have a big impact on them getting in.
Along with the upset to Ohio State, there were a couple other games featuring upsets. No. 12 Oregon lost to the lower ranked Washington State team, who was ranked No. 25 at the time. They lost that game 34-20. No. 20 ranked Cincinnati was also upset, but they lost to unranked Temple 24-17. I think it’s safe to say any hope Oregon had of getting into the College Football Playoff is gone, and I don’t think Cincinnati ever really had a chance anyway.
Tua Still Hasn’t Thrown an INT
College Football’s Heisman front runner continues to show us why he’s the front runner. In a 58-21 victory over Tennessee, Tua Tagovailoa threw 4 TD passes. Those TD passes put him at 25 on the season. What’s most impressive about that, is he has yet to throw an INT this year. Tua now has a completion percentage of 70.4% on the season. He’s thrown for 2,066 yards and has a QB rating of 238.8, which is currently crushing the QB rating of last year’s Heisman winner (198.9).
Clemson Destroys Unbeaten NC State
This game was the battle of the unbeaten teams. Many expected it to be a close game, but that wasn’t the case at all. Clemson dominated NC State 41-7, giving them a very convincing win. To make things even more convincing, NC State’s one TD came in the fourth quarter when the game was already put away. Clemson dominated from the start.
Rockets vs Lakers Brawl
The NBA has started and we’re already getting a little heat between teams. In the Rockets’ 124-115 victory, things got a little chippy. Words started to fly, which led to Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo getting in each other’s faces. Then fists started to fly. Lakers F Brandon Ingram also started to throw punches. The result of the fight was a suspension for Ingram (4 games), Rondo (3 games) and Paul (2 games).
The World Series is Set!
On Thursday of last week the Boston Red Sox finished off the Houston Astros by winning the series 4-1. They then waited to find out who their opponent would be in the World Series. The series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Milwaukee Brewers came down to a game 7, where the Dodgers won 5-1. The Dodgers will be playing the Red Sox for the World Series title this season. The World Series starts tomorrow! Who ya got?
