What You May Have Missed In Sports 11/3 – 11/4
In the unfortunate case you didn’t get to watch sports this past weekend, Fourth Quarter Sports has a recap of the events you may have missed. Let’s get you all caught up!
G.O.A.T. vs G.O.A.T.
The G.O.A.T vs G.O.A.T. game didn’t exactly come down to the wire like we hoped it would, but it was still fun to watch Tom Brady vs Aaron Rodgers. Tom Brady and the Patriots came out on top 31-17 against the Packers.
Both QBs played pretty well. Rodgers threw for 259 yards and 2 TDs, while Brady threw for 294 yards and 1 TD. It wasn’t Rodgers’ fault his team lost, but I think it’s safe to say the Patriots are the superior team.
Saints Beat the Undefeated Rams
There are no more undefeated teams in the NFL! The Saints had the challenge of facing the last remaining undefeated team. Didn’t seem like it phased them much, if at all. Drew Brees and the Saints put up 45 points to win the game 45-35. Brees had a phenomenal game, throwing for 346 yards and 4 TDs. The Rams’ defense has some work to do if they want to make a deep playoff run this year.
Broncos Miss Last Second FG
Houston won their sixth straight game yesterday against the Broncos, but they were close to having their streak snapped. Denver was in position to win the game with a FG, but K Brandon McManus missed a 51-yard kick as time expired.
Philip Rivers Makes 200th Consecutive Start in Victory
QB Philip Rivers made his 200th consecutive start against the Seattle Seahawks yesterday. He also led his team to a 25-17 victory over the Seahawks in Seattle. Rivers threw for 228 yards and 2 TDs against a solid Seattle defense.
What may have been more impressive, was the way the Chargers played defense at the end of the game. Russell Wilson was leading a strong comeback attempt at the end of the game, getting his team all the way down to the 1-yard line. The Chargers’ were phenomenal on defense in this late stand, ultimately sealing the win for their team.
Kansas Fires Head Coach David Beaty
The Kansas Jayhawks have fired Head Coach David Beaty. Why did he get fired? He had a record of 6-39 in more than three seasons with the team. There’s been a trend of coaches with bad records being fired lately, and I hope it continues.
Alabama Crushed LSU
If there was any question about who the best team in College Football was before, there’s not anymore. No. 1 Alabama went into this game against No. 3 LSU and absolutely crushed them! Alabama won 29-0 to clinch a spot in the SEC title game. This was the fourth time since 1996 Alabama has shut out LSU in their stadium. It’s pretty sad the number three team in the country couldn’t even score points.
Tua Tagovailoa had another great game against LSU, although this game did mark two firsts him this season. Tua threw his first INT of the season, but as all great QBs do, he shook it off pretty quick. This game was also the first time this season Tua played in the fourth quarter. He probably could have not played in the fourth quarter, but Alabama was just securing the win.
Several more upsets occurred in College Football this past weekend. Below is a list of all the top 25 teams who were beaten by unranked opponents.
Pittsburgh beat No. 25 Virginia 23-13
Missouri beat No. 11 Florida 38-17
Arizona State beat No. 15 Utah 38-20
Purdue beat No. 16 Iowa 38-36
Auburn beat No. 20 Texas A&M 28-24
Will Grier’s Late Heroics
Heisman candidate Will Grier led No. 13 West Virginia to a 42-41 over No. 17 Texas with a late comeback. West Virginia was down 34-41 with little time left to play, but Grier threw a beautiful pass to his receiver for a TD. West Virginia could have gone for the tie, but instead went for two. Will Grier ran it in for the two points to give his team the 42-41 win.
No. 5 Michigan Makes Statement
Michigan made their statement for being in the College Football Playoff against No. 14 PSU, beating them 42-7. This was a statement Michigan needed to make leading up to their game in a few weeks with Ohio State. If Michigan can win the rest of their games, their chances of being in the Playoff are pretty good.
Lakers Snap 16 Game Losing Streak to Blazers
With the help of LeBron James, the LA Lakers snapped their 16-game losing streak to the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday. LeBron James led the Lakers with 28 points as they beat the Blazers 114-110.
Devin Booker’s Game Winner
Suns star Devin Booker helped his team snap a seven-game losing streak by hitting the game winning shot against the Memphis Grizzlies. Booker hit a two point shot to go up 102-100 with 1.7 seconds left in the game.
Victor Oladipo’s Heroics
Victor Oladipo continues to lead the Pacers in a strong season start. With a 102-101 victory over the Celtics, the Pacers are now 7-3. Oladipo was a hero in this game, hitting a three point shot with 3.4 seconds left in the game to put the Pacers ahead by one point. He then came up with a steal on the other end of the floor to seal the victory for the Pacers.
Pakistan Whitewash New Zealand
In this series of twists and turns, Pakistan came out on top each and every time, winning the series 3-0. Man of the Series went to Pakistani batting all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez, while Man of the Match in the third T20I went to Babar Azam, who scored 79 runs on Sunday. Azam, in the process, broke the record for the quickest to 1000 T20I runs, completing the feat in 26 matches, compared to Indian batsmen Virat Kohli’s 27. New Zealand, in the third T20I, collapsed from 96-2 to 119, losing eight wickets for just 23 runs. Shadab Khan’s three wickets earned him the record for most T20I wickets in a calendar year, with 28 to his name.
Lacazette Rescues Arsenal
Predicting Arsenal to lose at home to Liverpool, exactly that was happening at the Emirates until Alexandre Lacazette’s 81st-minute goal. Midfielder James Milner gave Liverpool the one goal advantage in the second half, but Lacazette’s curling rescue allowed Arsenal to salvage a point. Subject to controversy, Sadio Mané did score for Liverpool, but the goal was deemed offside, which didn’t allow Liverpool to win the match.
England Announce Wayne Rooney Farewell
Although English football legend Wayne Rooney hasn’t featured in the team in well over a year, he will receive one last game as a farewell match. He will feature in the England team when the English play the US on November 15 at Wembley Stadium in London. Wayne Rooney has had a remarkable, established and respectable career, starting off at Everton FC, before being picked up by Manchester United, where he made his name before returning to Everton for one season, and now helping DC United in the MLS making playoffs.
